Are you struggling to keep your natural hair moisturized? Although scalps retain oil naturally, straight hair more easily retains moisture — curly-haired folk often suffer from oil buildup on top of their heads, which results in the build-up, dry flakes, and dry hair. That said if you’re so over natural hair drying out, here is a neat trick for keeping natural hair moisturized – Wash and Go.
Wash and go is the ultimate staple in the natural hair community. It’s quick, it’s easy, and saves your hair from the damage of heat styling. All you need is water, clean and moisturized hair, a few styling essentials, and voila—you’re ready to walk out the door. With a wash and go, you’re essentially incorporating your entire hair care and styling routine into your shower routine.
What You Need to Do A Wash and Go Method on Natural Hair
- Sulfate-free shampoo
- Conditioner
- Leave-in conditioner
- Wide-tooth comb
- Shower cap
- Natural hair oil
- Curling custard or styling gel
- Satin/silk scarf
How to Do A Wash And Go Method for Natural Hair
- Drench your hair completely in water, so your curl pattern begins to show.
- Apply a good portion of shampoo to your scalp. Massage your scalp with your fingers and rinse thoroughly.
- Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair. Slick it down the length of your hair from roots to ends.
- Finger detangle during the process or use a wide-tooth comb to gently remove shed hair and knots.
- Cover up with a shower cap and allow the conditioner to sit in your hair for at least 10 minutes, then rinse out the conditioner thoroughly.
- Apply the leave-in conditioner and saturate your hair very well with it. This nurtures your hair and keeps it healthy.
- Massage your favorite natural hair oil throughout all your hair strands and gently wet your hair until it’s dripping a little.
- Part your hair into smaller sections and apply a healthy amount of the curling custard or styling gel to your hair, working it down from root to tip and using your fingers to separate the curls.
- Shake your hair vigorously to separate the curls and add volume to your hair.
- Allow to air dry or dry overnight. Never use a hairdryer to dry your hair.
- Pull your hair into a puff and cover securely with a satin/silk scarf to preserve your curls overnight.
- Take off the scarf and spritz your hair with a leave-in conditioner the next day to refresh your curls.
- Then style as desired.
A good wash and go routine can be the difference between tangled, matted hair, and healthy, hydrated, happy curls. Wash and goes are not all created the same. You can have a more defined wash and goes. You can have a more voluminous wash and goes. You can even have stretched wash and go and more.
So, we have some additional tips for you to get the type of wash and go that you want.
For more definition, you want to make sure to incorporate plenty of water when you are applying each of your products. For more volume, you want to separate your curls and may choose to brush through them when applying your styling products for a fuller look. For a longer look, you can try stretching your curls with a diffuser or with our satin scrunchies, or pull your hair up into a unicorn horn and secure loosely with scrunchies for 10 minutes on dry hair. Then let your curls loose, fluff, and go.
And remember, if you need a little assistance, it’s never a bad idea to book an appointment with a hairstylist who can walk you through it.
